Gain supermarkets loss

Gain supermarkets loss

There was speculation after the first traces of horsemeat was found in Tesco’s beef burgers that butchers would face a rise in sales. Apparently, this has turned into fact and some butchers are busier than ever. Over the last few years, it has been a sad time for the butchering industry, with a significant amount of butcher’s shops closing or worried about their future, due to the increase in cheap processed meat available at the supermarket. The old tradition of visiting your local butcher and having a chat had pretty much been abolished but times seem to have changed.

A large proportion of the general public have lost all faith in supermarket products, especially ones that contain meat. As an alternative, they are getting their meat from a local butcher, revisiting old traditions and buying from a trustworthy and reliable source. If you ask a butcher where his meat is from, he will be able to tell you and it is more than likely it will be sourced locally. They are open and honest, allowing you to view their quality butchers equipment. Butchers also have the ability to demonstrate cutting meat and can also offer advice on the best way to cook it.

With the rise in people visiting their local butcher, it is unlikely we will see a huge decrease again. We are growing more accustomed to the old tradition and a lot of the public seem to be happy to pay a little extra to know they are buying quality produce. When it was revealed horsemeat and bute was found in products advertised as beef, a large proportion of the UK turned vegetarian, illustrating just how stressing some found the whole issue. A large proportion of those who couldn’t bear to give up meat turned to their local butcher for comfort and haven’t looked back since, moving on to bigger and better things.
